Well everyone it's FINALLY HERE!! No Man's Sky is now available. My copy is in the mail and I should be receiving it tonight...I wanted to start this thread so that people that have it can share some of their discoveries. Looking forward to hearing all the crazy stories people will have!

I'm curious as to the reviews and such. This game has me on the fence. It looks good but not entirely sure what all you actually do in it.

I need you all to convince me...haha

JW I haven't played it yet (my copy is in shipment) but everything I have read has me more and more intrigued. Some people are reviewing it harshly because it's not what they expected. To me, I was always taking it as like mature Animal Crossing in space, which from what I have read sounds about right. It's all about exploring and taking your time. It's not action heavy and story driven...it's more about taking the time to enjoy discovering things.

Again I have yet to play it but it should be at my house by the time I get home from work so I will be able to tell you more after I have spent some time with it lol.

Two of my friends have it so far and played it. I'm not spending $80+ on it. (Damn it, Canada!)

During their honeymoon phase with the game, one sounded relatively unimpressed/unhappy due to game design making it unnecessarily difficult and annoying for him to do early objectives, the other was impressed, but acknowledged early on that the exploration aspects felt "tedious."

My takeaway from their impressions and what I've been reading so far is that if you go into it expecting a very chill game where you're just casually looking around to see neat stuff, you'll enjoy it. How long that appeal will last will vary from person to person though. I imagine that seeing a lot of same-y planets with weird mushroom trees can only be interesting the first 2-3 times tops.

Hopefully by the time I get around to buying a reasonably priced copy of this game they'll have patched in some content to make the long-term gameplay seem more appealing.

I want No Man's Sky when people have been echoing Dhobo's comments that it is a chill exploration-focused game. But then I watch people play it on streams and it does not seem to be that to me.

What I've seen is a need to collect resources in order to power your ship to visit other planets. Also, to craft items if you want to better your various stats (gun that shoots longer, ability to jetpack further, etc). However, collecting items for crafting or fuel is hindered by those weird flying robot dudes that will start shooting at you if you take too many resources at once. Sure, you can just wander off a minute and go somewhere else, but those bots seem commonplace on almost every planet I've seen so far.

It hardly seems chill if you need to be on edge when collecting items, and a bit complex when the tech trees aren't spelled right out for you. There are a lot of menus (from what I've seen anyway) to sift through and limits on how much collected stuff you can store on your person or in the ship. All of this makes the game feel like "managing" plays a big part in the experience. That's great for people who love that, but to me, it hardly seems like a relaxing, casual-friendly time when you have to work/grind to get anywhere.

I wish it were completely sandbox-y in that you could flip a mode to just fly anywhere and experience tons of amazing, unique planets without worrying about crafting. Even so, I've heard from some that most planets they've experienced so far are not THAT variable either. Like, the algorithm which creates planets allows for certain forms of variation but such that you start to see the restrictions after a while.

Despite all this I still want to buy No Man's Sky. :P

Based on the impressions and videos I've seen....this is a moho_00 kinda game. I'm trying to resist buying it because I need to finish Chrono Trigger, and I just started Okami HD and PowerSlave....and I'll be out of town in a few weeks and I'm moving soon....so yeah :D

Waiting for the 12th to fire it up myself and see what it actually is. I'm attracted to the exploration part mostly and hope the 'survival' stuff doesn't get too much in the way. The hype was always too much and only exploration 10000000 planets is not a game. I'll see how it fares and report back next week :)

I like it. It is more survival than expected and you don't 'hop' planets frequently like in the demo's. In fact, after 4 hours i'm still on my starting planet. I was already in space once but didn't have a hyperdrive yet. But I always tend to take these things slow, and it is great to see 'what's on the other side of that mountain'. And you get pointers to interesting stuff all the time so I keep hunting the (?) on screen.

It runs allright on my Intel 2600, gtz970, 16Gb @ windows 10 Anniversary Edition. You get some framerate issues when you enter the game but when you have done a 360 turn it is gone. Using the default settings so far, which are fine for me atm.

All in all having a lot of fun just exploring. Even if my first world is really depressing (no bright colors etc).

Personally, I really enjoy what I have played so far. I am only maybe 3 hours in, but it's honestly exactly what I was hoping it would be. Marcelloz is right, there definitely is more survival emphasis than they showed, but I am ok with that. The biggest thing to get used to is the menu system which I personally feel is a little clumsy. But overall I am extremely satisfied with my purchase!

Marcelloz, what kind of planet did you start out on? My planet was frigid cold being -41.0 C right when I stepped out of the ship!

My planet was 40+C so pretty ok, but it looks really barren, kinda like Fallout 3. It got a pretty unpronounceable name but that's ok. :)

That planet looks awesome!! You know you can change the name correct? It took me forever to figure out how, but once I did I was doing it like crazy lol.

I've been on 3 planets so far...one was really cold (my initial one), one had constant acid rain, and the one I am on currently is just normal.

Pretty neat planet yeah, and I didn't change the name of this one, i found it hilariously cryptic so decided to keep it. Been to two other planets so far and renamed them but letting them sound like the first one. One was tropical but without 'animals', the other one is a bit like the first but a little more colourful.

I was gifted a copy of this last week on GOG. Haven't tried it yet but I'll be sure to throw my thoughts on here once I do.

After 30 hours I threw away my save game as I was a bit 'stuck' on my first stellar system. Couldn't get a warp cell, but I learned enough to know how to level up (exosuit and ship) again pretty fast. Have played the new playthrough for 4 hours now and already travelled to 3 other stellar systems, can now craft a warp cell on my own and visited more planets than before. And I get the feeling the farther you get, the more features the planets have.

One thing that is a bit of a bummer is that you cannot easily travel 'back' to systems you once visited. No system that allows you to easily travel back.

Still having fun but it begins to wear a bit.
