I just joined the site and imported my nearly 2200 game Steam library (and have 12 more purchased yesterday during the Halloween sale) .....now I have a dilemma on how to approach this before digging into my huge backlog.

Thankfully I have spent most of my gaming in recent years playing MMO's so my completed games is relatively small compared to the size of my game library (50 or so) but it looks like I have several options.

All of my competed games have achievements so I'm confident I could add them to "My Completions" with accurate time played, dates and how much of the content was completed.

Or I could simply label them as "finished" which would be quicker but the wouldn't show them on my completed page.

Or I simply start adding games that I have completed after my join date but that would leave the previously completed games in limbo unless I add them as "retired" with the 100's I have that already fall into that category. This is the least appealing option for me.

How did other people approach this?

What I did was:

  1. Start adding games that I complete after the day I joined.
  2. One day I updated every game (marked them as finished, added a score, etc.) and added a completion for the games whose completion dates, scores and time I was sure of.
  3. Another day I did the same for the games whose info was hard to find.
  4. And another day I'll do the same for the games I played when I was a kid, whose info will be really hard to find.

I suggest you mark the games as finished and maybe another day (when you feel like it) you add a completion for them as it can be a lot more tedious.

Hi there Randver, welcome to the site!

You bring up a good question as I think all of us have done different things with how we approaching marking games completed.

For me, what I did was add all my Steam games via the import function. Then I went through the list and marked stuff as finished that I basically knew to be the case. After this, I cross referenced my beaten/completed stats on my Backloggery/How Long to Beat/Steam accounts and added some of that in. However I got bored and still have not finished this.

As of right now I'm adding completions as I finish them. So, if I finished two games this past week then I'll mark them as such on Completionator. So I'm intending to keep up with modern stuff but still have a backlog of data to input.

I'm in the process of adding/reorganizing categories in Steam so I can start transferring the information here without losing track of what information is here and what still needs to be added.

I think starting with very general information (finished, retired) and then adding more detailed information is probably the best route for me. I'll keep my current games updated here which I hope will stop me from bouncing around between games so much and I'll actually start working through my backlog. Disconnecting my internet during Steam sales may be a good idea too ;p

Thanks for the advice.

I think the beauty of this site is that it allows for you to do that however you best see fit.

Personally, I mark every game as 'finished' when I actually finish it. I was using both 'finished' and 'completionated' when I first started using the site, but realized I could differentiate that with an actual completion time entered (if I could find one and/or remember one). So I think that I have changed everything to 'finished'. If it is something I can't finish or something that I just don't ever intend to finish, I use 'other' or 'retired or something else.

However, I do know that there are several games I've finished but can't recall actual times or the save file that I have doesn't have time tracked. I also did use backloggery before this and was able to pull times from that too.

I think you just do what you can and some of your games will just have to be entered without an actual completion time entered. Or if you know you have a good 'guesstimate', then you could certainly enter that.

@Randver - Hello and welcome

I'm sort of an outlier since I built the site, but like many others, I had a decent amount of information logged on Backloggery, HowLongToBeat, and even Steam itself. I went through and set up my backlog and then used lists to further manage things. As for completions, I gradually went through what I had logged elsewhere and now I just stay on top of things by tracking time via playthroughs.

The main thing I would recommend is don't make it feel like work! There's no rush to get your data entered, so take your time and explore the site. Of course, if you have any feedback, you're welcome to post on here as well
