I managed to assign someone a game and that someone doesn't seem to actually use the site anymore. Am I doomed to have this on my "My Missions" page forever?

Unfortunately, that's how it is right now I would like to fix this at some point though, either by hiding "inactive" missions or allowing the person who assigned it to cancel it after a period of inactivity.

What does everyone think about this? Should you be able to cancel inactive missions or just have way for them to not show up? The reverse issue applies to completed missions, since you immediately lose access to those. It seems like you should be able to go back to those at some point, considering there was potentially some communication therein.

The best way to solve the problem might be to add the ability to hide a mission rather than cancel it. That feels less likely to be abused.

Having access to completed/archived missions (like you do with completions) would also be nice.

I'm wondering if the system could just auto-hide things that don't have a time entry OR communication on it for x number of days? One concern I would have is if someone hasn't done anything on a mission for a while (like me!) and you hide it...then they start playing it again, you would have no idea. If we just auto hide / show, you would only see active stuff. I could add a filter to let you see inactive (and completed) missions, but the default would be active and incomplete.

Activity on archived missions could activate a notification on the user menu for "My Missions." Then when you click into it your mission screen could have a new section at the bottom that was "Archived with recent activity" (recent activity being a time entry or message) with buttons to unarchive like you can do for playthroughs?

Regarding completed missions: I think having an archive page (or some other way to separate it from the active stuff) for completed missions would be ideal. Keep it segregated from the more "active" stuff. Or simply let them naturally go hidden over time due to inactivity.

As for the concern about hidden missions becoming active again going unnoticed, that's pretty much how I see it now since notifications only happen if there's a new message for a mission, but not a new time entry. I could be wrong though, since it's been a while since I've had any activity in my Mission section. In the event I'm not wrong though, not all missions are going to result in conversations, but it would be nice to know when someone gets around to playing one of my assigned missions so I can be ready to spark up a convo to see what they think of the game, or how it's going, etc...

I like merph's idea of having an archived mission pop back into relevancy if there's a new message. Have it un-hide (if necessary) and restart the inactivity countdown while throwing a notification.

I would suggest another trigger type for notifications though beside messages and new time entries. If possible, I would include editing time entries. Catching an edit on a time entry for notification purposes might not be doable, but if you can do it moho_00, it would catch use cases where someone keeps updating a single total time entry instead of entering individual session times.
