Description

There is a saying in Russian: "You spend a new year the same way you welcome it". During the celebration of New Year 2021, I decided to set up the better one out of two of my PCs and indulged in playing my favorite Koei Warriors games for several days. Turned out to be pretty prophetic for me as Warriors titles almost became the only thing I played this entire year. And I don't regret it a single bit. New PC-ports, unfinished completions, emulators, community events, nostalgia trips - you name it, and I probably had a Warriors-related experience this year close to what you thought about.
Of course, I had a chance to try some games outside of this franchise (especially, during this fall), but not as many as you would expect. My annual "Top 10 Games I played this year" lists are not usually much different from one another, but that fact has never stopped me from creating a new one each December and has only fueled my motivation to play more and more.
Happy upcoming holidays, everyone! Thank y'all for another great year on Completionator.com! I am happy to be a part of this community.
Here is my list:

1

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Game of the Year Edition

I just can't help myself. I am still looking to find a game that will make me fall in love with it more than TES IV did during my teenage years

2

The Witcher III: Wild Hunt - Game of the Year Edition

And this might be a pretty good candidate, by the way, It is a shame that I've only spent a couple of hours on the game considered by many to be the best action RPG ever, but you can't just beat all of them at once, right? Being a huge TES fan, I can already see that it might not suit all my tastes at 100%, but the potential is totally there with this game's seemingly unparalleled atmosphere and storytelling. Looking forward to sinking my teeth in it deeper.

Dynasty Warriors 4

2021 saw me resuming my 100% completion attempt for my first ever Koei Warriors experience - the PC port of Dynasty Warriors 4. Spending several dozens of hours more with it made me realize once again how magnificent of a game this really is, even in situations when you force yourself to play the same stage over and over to grind for better items.
I had to stop this completion temporarily this July due to technical reasons, but I'm not even considering giving up. Can't wait to get back at it again when I have a chance, actually.

Just Cause 3

Now, this was a very pleasant surprise. I enjoyed playing Just Cause 2 for all its grindy collecting and mindless action, but to an extent. Just Cause 3 seems to have a bit less in the collecting department but beats its predecessor in everything else by a mile. When you stop to enjoy the atmosphere and the open world visuals of a game that is all about guns and explosions, you know that you've got something good on your hands. I won't be surprised if I happen to 100% this beauty in 2022.

5

Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition

I am sure that if I played DW8: XLCE more this year, it would've ended even higher on this list. I will always find time for you, old friend, don't you worry about it.

6

Musou Orochi Z

It took me some time to get really invested in MOZ after not playing it regularly in years, but after I spent several hours with it during my #MusouMay marathon, oh boy, was it all worth it. It's hard to describe this, but this game can provide you with a totally different level of fun, challenge, and joy if you really allow it to.

Warriors Orochi 4 Ultimate

I hate to say it, but the main reason this game is not in the Top 5 is probably that there is just too much stuff to complete in it and it's not like it's very much diverse. And the competition turned to be surprisingly high on this list as well. Still enjoyed the heck out of this smoothly-running eye candy. I will probably finish the "Infinity Mode" before entering my completion here.

Samurai Warriors 2

Well, this is a bit unexpected, but I've actually spent quite a lot of time with this game in 2021 and got just a little bit tired of it, to be honest. Otherwise, it would have made my Top 5 as it usually does, I think.

King's Bounty: The Legend

Kind of the same situation going on there as with Warriors Orochi 4 Ultimate: this game having some huge amounts of content kinda stops me from committing properly and finally beating it. It is pretty easy to get burned out when you try to clear all of the locations, beat every single enemy, and complete every quest, and have to do this for a very long time. Unfortunately, that is just the way I like to play my video games, and sometimes, it can backfire.
The game itself is pretty good though ;p

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Special Edition

Even though I find it incredibly hard to come up with new and exciting ideas of what to do in this game after all these years, my adventures in Skyrim still remain enjoyable most of the time. Finally trying this upgraded Special Edition version as well as starting a new completion on "Legendary" difficulty helped me rediscover this title yet again, although it feels nowhere near as exciting as it did several years ago. Maybe I should finally start modding my TES games?
