My Top 10 of 2022!

A Plague Tale: Requiem

I went into A Plague Tale: Requiem expecting the usual sequel formula. What this game delivered was so SO much more. The story (though deeply depressing) was addicting, and the graphics were the best I have seen in any game yet. There were so many moments where I had to just sit and stare at the environment in awe. I became so immersed in the game that it was the only thing on my mind for weeks, and haunted me even after I finished it.

I didn't think much of the first game, and wasn't too interested in it at first. However, it was so incredibly worth it just to experience the second game.

Marvel's Spider-Man: Remastered

Marvel's Spider-Man: Remastered brings the world of Spider-Man to PC for the first time ever. It's something I've been dreaming of ever since I got my first PC. I have sunken at least a hundred hours into this game since it was first released on the platform. The gameplay is beyond what I expected, since previous Spider-Man games I've played have never felt smooth. This game makes you feel like you're already completely experienced in swinging around, and does everything possible to minimize choppy swinging. It is some of the best animation work I have ever seen in a video game.

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice is a beautiful yet haunting experience, with gorgeous scenery and unique gameplay. It explores the important topic of mental illness, and does so in an impressive way. The game utilizes binaural audio to let you fully experience Senua's psychosis, with whispers plaguing you from every direction and distance. On top of this, the game makes you feel as though you are accompanying Senua instead of being her. It was such an interesting experience, and I can't wait for the second game.

Vampire Survivors

I can't stop playing send help please

Nauticrawl: 20,000 Atmospheres

This game was such an unexpected surprise. I had no idea what I was getting into when I started it. The best way to describe Nauticrawl: 20,000 Atmospheres is that it is the child of Iron lung and Outer Wilds, with a hint of Dune. You learn the story through exploration in a vehicle you can't see out of, and death is expected and part of the cycle. But boy, the game does not hold your hand. It took a lot of patience to learn all the controls (made up entirely of buttons and levers), and when you think you've got it all down the game slaps you in the face with another completely unique system. It was fun as hell.

A Short Hike

Yet another unexpected surprise. I knew nothing about A Short Hike when I opened it up, but once I did, I didn't close the game until I had completed everything there was to do. The game plays out like a light-hearted adventure, with an Animal Crossing-like character design and relatable dialogue. There were so many little things to discover and secrets to find, it was such an exciting experience.

Metro Exodus

I am a long time fan of the Metro games, so I was very excited to try out Metro Exodus. The game follows a different approach to modern FPS games; you have to have patience and strategy. The world is unforgiving and tense; yet so incredibly atmospheric and detail-rich that I couldn't help but stop and appreciate my surroundings. Metro Exodus has an excellent storyline, with hints of supernatural that make everything a little bit more terrifying. The game was such a refreshing break from the usual formula, and I can confidently say that it is the best game in the series yet.

God of War (2018)

Before I played the 2018 God of War game, I spent about a month digging my way through every previous God of War game just so I could understand any reference snippets. I'm glad I did, because I became hooked to the games. After I had finally made it through them all, I opened up the newest (at the time) God of War and got started. I don't think I have to say much about this game that no one already knows. Seeing the rest of Kratos' story was such a fun experience, and how he had changed over the many years between this and the last game. The graphics were stunning, and the gameplay was incredibly fun. I am excited to play Ragnarok when it comes to PC.

HROT

When I think of Quake, I certainly don't think of humor. Yet HROT manages to combine the two together perfectly. Even though there is absolutely no story whatsoever, the gameplay is done masterfully and I couldn't stop playing. The pacing, the music, the visuals, everything about this game was done right. I recommend this game to everyone who is a fan of Quake-style games.

Batman: Arkham City - Game of the Year Edition

Yes, it took me until 2022 to finally play through the Batman Arkham games. I played in order of release, starting with Arkham Asylum. When I got to Arkham City, I was so pleased with the change of game design to be more open world. The new traversal mechanic was so fun to mess around with, grappling and gliding from building to building. I had such a fun time playing through Arkham City for the first time, and I'm excited to try out Arkham Knight.
